Lisans ve Yüksek lisans öğrenimini Ankara Üniversitesi Astronomi ve Uzay Bilimleri bölümünde tamamlarken doktorasını Oxford Üniversitesi Astrofizik bölümünde tamamladı. 1 yıl süreyle Nagoya Üniversitesi'nde ziyaretçi araştırmacı olarak bulundu. Felsefeye ilgi duyan Topal 2021 yılında Felsefe lisans derecesi almıştır. 2017 yılından itibaren Van YYÜ Fizik Bölümü’nde Yüksek Enerji ve Plazma Fiziği Anabilim Dalı başkanı olarak görev yapmaktadır.

Birçok mecrada popüler astronomi yazıları kaleme almakta (bkz. Yazılar), TV/Radyo programlarına katılmakta (bkz. TV/Radyo), bilim-toplum projeleri hayata geçirmekte (bkz. projeler), seminerler vermekte (bkz. seminerler), söyleşiler/konuşmalar yapmakta (bkz. konuşmalar) ve Temmuz 2019 tarihinde kurduğu YouTube kanalıyla ilgilenen herkes için popüler astronomi temalı Gelecek Uzayda video serisi hazırlamaktadır (Bkz. YouTube/drselçuktopal).

Gerekli koşullar oluştuğunda ülkemizdeki eğitim kurumlarını şahsen ziyaret etmektedir. Ocak 2020 tarihi itibarıyla, 30 şehre bizzat gitmiş ve toplamda 80.000 km’den fazla yol kat etmiştir. Bu mesafe Dünya’nın çevresinde iki tur atmaya eşdeğer bir mesafedir. Dr. Topal, bireysel olarak (2013-2015 arası Astronomi ve Bilimde Kariyer online seminerleri dahil değildir) 100 bini aşkın uzay tutkununa Gelecek Uzayda temalı seminerler vermiştir. Katıldığı TV programları ve yazdığı popüler bilim makaleleri ile çok daha fazla sayıda bilim severe ulaşmış, ulaşmaya devam etmektedir. Kar amacı gütmeyen #gelecekuzayda projesi, yukarıda bahsedilen tüm etkinlikler dikkate alındığında ülkemizdeki en kapsamlı bilim-toplum ve astronomi projesidir. Proje devam etmektedir.

İnsanoğlunun hayat bulduğu bu gezegende yok olmayacağına ve Evren dediğimiz bu sonsuz kozmik denize bir gün yelken açacağına inanan Topal’ın sloganı #gelecekuzayda! Giresun/Eynesil doğumlu olan Selçuk Topal evli ve iki çocuk babasıdır: Uzay ve Venüs.

He completed his undergraduate and graduate studies at the Department of Astronomy and Space Sciences at Ankara University, and his doctorate at the Department of Astrophysics at Oxford University. He was a visiting researcher at Nagoya University for 1 year. Topal, who is interested in philosophy, received his undergraduate degree in Philosophy in 2021. Since 2017, he has been working as the head of the Department of High Energy and Plasma Physics at Van YYU Physics Department.

He writes popular astronomy articles in many media (see Articles), participates in TV / Radio programs (see TV / Radio), implements science-society projects (see projects), gives seminars (see seminars), talks (see speeches). On his YouTube channel, which he founded in July 2019, he prepares popular astronomy-themed #gelecekuzayda videos for anyone interested (see YouTube/drselçuktopal).

He also visits the educational institutions in Turkey. As of January 2020, he personally travelled to 30 cities and travelled more than 80,000 km in total. This distance is equivalent to making two revolutions around the Earth. Dr Topal (excluding the Career in Astronomy and Science online seminars held between 2013 and 2015) has given talks about space and science to more than 100 thousand space enthusiasts. With the TV programs he participates in and the popular science articles he writes, he continues to reach many more science lovers. The non-profit project #gelecekuzayda is the biggest science-society and astronomy project in Turkey, considering all the activities mentioned above. The project continues. After a long break caused by the Covid-19, he has started to visit schools in Turkey as of May 2022.

 

Topal believes that human beings will not perish on this planet where they live and that one day they will sail to this endless cosmic sea we call the Universe. His slogan is #gelecekuzayda! The Future is in Space! Born in Giresun/Eynesil, Selçuk Topal is married and has two children named Uzay and Venus.
